
CS Namwamba appoints experienced sports organizer to lead WRC

Throughout his career, Gacheru has managed big sporting events
Sports Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Ababu Namwamba, has appointed Charles Gacheru as the CEO of the WRC Safari Rally Kenya for a three-year term, as per a gazette notice issued on Friday. Gacheru takes over from Phineas Kimathi.
Additionally, CS Ababu has assembled the Oversight Team for WRC, with himself as Chair and Peter Tum, Principal Secretary in the State Department of Sports, serving as Vice-Chair.
The team comprises members such as the PS of the State Department of Tourism, a representative from the Kenya Motor Sports Federation, KCB Group CEO Paul Russo, Caroline Gatimu, Safina Khan, Isaac Melly, and Maurice Chetambe.
Gacheru will serve as both the CEO of the WRC Safari Rally Project and the Secretary to the Oversight Team.
With nearly two decades of experience, Gacheru is a seasoned sports organizer and the founder/MD of IMG Kenya, the country’s premier sports agency.
Throughout his career, Gacheru has managed various sporting events, including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, local and international golf tournaments such as the Magical Kenya Ladies Open, the Magical Kenya Open, the Karen Masters, and numerous amateur golf series across East Africa.
His involvement extends to rugby with the Safari Sevens Rugby Championship and the Sevens Circuit, while in football; he holds the position of Chairman of Tusker FC.
Gacheru's company also manages the sports portfolios for KCB Bank and KBL across various sports like rally, golf, rugby, football, chess, and volleyball.
In his youth, Gacheru represented Kenya in badminton at the age of 16 while studying at Mangu High School. He is also an avid golfer and previously served as a golf columnist for the Business Daily newspaper for over a decade.
